Brown color in many natural diamonds is linked to plastic deformation of the crystal lattice. During this process, defects including clusters of vacancies—missing carbon atoms—can absorb visible light and create brown coloration. Not every brown diamond has exactly the same color mechanism, but deformation is the leading cause.
