History & heritage

Across history, sapphire has been associated with nobility, faithfulness and the heavens, and it has been worn by royalty and clergy. The modern gem name belongs to a much older history of blue stones, language and symbolism.

Religious & textual traditions

Blue stones hold a luminous place in biblical imagery: the Hebrew word sappīr appears in Exodus and Ezekiel in descriptions of a heavenly pavement, the high priest’s breastpiece and a throne-like vision. Scholars caution, however, that biblical sappīr most likely meant lapis lazuli—not the corundum gem now known as sapphire. This is a legacy of language and symbolism rather than a certain identification of the modern stone.
